Why Dental Check-ups are Important During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Posted on September 15, 2020 by Cristi Cheek.

As we all do our best to prevent exposing ourselves to the coronavirus by isolating at home or by protecting ourselves with masks, hand sanitizer, and maintaining six foot distances as we venture out, we also need to be mindful of keeping our bodies healthy so that our immune system can be ready in case it is confronted with this virus. Did you know that there is a direct link between your oral wellness and your overall health?  We have all heard that people with certain risk factors like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems are more likely to have complications if they contract COVID-19. Maintaining good oral hygiene and ensuring that we have regular dental examinations and cleanings is important in helping to ensure that our immune system is functioning at full capacity and is not already overwhelmed fighting off oral bacteria when it is confronted with coronavirus particles. Sensitive Teeth

Posted on April 23, 2020 by Kristina Chandler.

Does a bite of cold ice cream or a sip of hot coffee sometimes hurt your teeth? If so, you are not alone. Sensitive teeth is a common problem we see among our patients. The great news is that sensitive teeth can be treated; however, the type of treatment depends on what is causing the sensitivity. [Read more…]

Same Day Implant Teeth

Posted on November 15, 2019 by Cristi Cheek.

Over the past decade there has been a lot of buzz in the media about same day implants and teeth.  In some cases, a smile can be restored with a single implant and crown or with multiple implants and a set of teeth in just one day. Dentists must use good judgement when assessing a patient to determine whether same day implant restoration is a good option for that patient.  In many cases it is much more difficult to place a single implant and restore it with a crown the same day than it is to place multiple implants and a full set of teeth in one appointment. Back-to-School Dental Emergencies

Posted on August 16, 2019 by Cristi Cheek.

In our dental practice, we sometimes see young patients being rushed into our office with injuries to their teeth from school-related activities.  The injuries we have seen have ranged from a small chip on a tooth from a fall on the playground or hallway to teeth being completely knocked out by a Lacrosse stick or even another child’s head. So, what are you as a parent to do when you get that call from the school? [Read more…]

Finding a GOOD Dentist for Your Family

Posted on May 16, 2019 by Cristi Cheek.

As a mom of three, I know the pressures we moms feel in making decisions for our kids’ health.  We buy organic when possible, we try to make sure our kids get outside and aren’t glued to their electronics all weekend, and we research online and among neighbors when trying to find healthcare providers like pediatricians and dentists. But how do you really know if a dentist is “good?”  Do you seek the opinions of neighbors and co-workers?  Co-workers and neighbors can be good resources for recommending a dentist based on the dentist’s personality, gentleness, and appearance of the office, but may not always know if the work being done is of high quality.  However, word-of-mouth recommendations are a good place to start. Reading online reviews next to be sure that others have the same great experience is important as well. [Read more…]

FullSizeRenderIn my dental practice, I have seen many of my school-aged patients with front teeth painfully reshaped by monkey bars, the school’s tile floor, or even another child’s head.  So what is a parent to do when you get that call from the school? [Read more…]

Why are dental costs so pricey and variable?

Posted on September 30, 2015 by Cristi Cheek.

Dentistry is a profession that is both art and science. It should not be treated as a commodity where comparison shopping is based on price alone. There are many reasons why a treatment plan quoted by one dentist may vary greatly from that of another dentist and why the associated costs for each procedure may also differ. [Read more…]

How to Prevent a TKO (Tooth Knock Out)

Posted on August 21, 2015 by Cristi Cheek.

On a Thursday afternoon recently, a beautiful young lady was rushed into my office with a bloody rag held up to her mouth. Two of her front teeth were missing, the gums surrounding those teeth were torn and bleeding, and there was a broken hunk of bone hanging from the area where the teeth had been.  She had been running on the field at school during lacrosse practice when another student ran into her, accidentally head-butting her in the mouth.  As we tried to come up with a plan to piece this pretty child’s smile back together, I couldn’t help thinking “Why wasn’t she wearing a mouthguard?” [Read more…]

Common Dental Emergencies

Posted on August 14, 2014 by Cristi Cheek.

Seeing a dentist regularly is important not only for check-ups to maintain your good oral health, but also to ensure that there is someone available for you when that unfortunate situation arises where you or your family member needs emergency care. Four common emergencies that may require an immediate call to your dentist are: a tooth that has been knocked out, a broken tooth, a crown that has come off, or a toothache. [Read more…]
