Common Dental Emergencies: What to Do Before You Arrive

Dental emergencies can be stressful, but taking a few simple steps before coming into the office can help protect your oral health and allow our team to provide care as quickly and effectively as possible. If you are experiencing severe swelling, difficulty breathing, or trauma involving the face or jaw, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Toothache or Sudden Dental Pain

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to remove any debris. If swelling is present, apply a cold compress to the outside of the face in short intervals. Avoid placing aspirin or other pain medications directly on the tooth or gums. Call our office as soon as possible so we can evaluate the cause of the pain and provide relief.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

If a tooth has chipped or broken, save any pieces you can and bring them with you to your appointment. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on the affected side until you’re seen by our team.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth has been completely knocked out, handle it by the crown (the top of the tooth), not the root. If possible, gently rinse it with water without scrubbing and try to place it back into the socket. If that’s not possible, store the tooth in milk or saliva and come to the office immediately. Time is critical in these situations.

Lost Filling or Crown

If a filling or crown comes out, keep the restoration if you still have it and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that area, as the tooth may be sensitive or vulnerable to further damage. Contact our office promptly so we can protect the tooth and restore it properly.
